Asif Ahmad

Vice President Diagnostic Services and Chief Information Officer
Duke University Health System

Asif Ahmad Asif Ahmad has been the Vice President and Chief Information Officer of the Duke University Health System and Medical Center since February 2003. He provides leadership, direction, and strategic planning for the information technology staff and functions in support of Duke University Health System and Medical Center, which includes Duke University Hospital, Durham Regional Hospital, Duke Health Raleigh Hospital, Schools of Medicine and Nursing, the Diagnostic and Outpatient Clinics, research laboratories and programs of the allied health professions. In September 2005, Mr. Ahmad's role was expanded to include Diagnostic Services. As the Vice President Diagnostic Services he is responsible for developing the overall strategy of diagnostic support for DUHS, these services include Radiology and Clinical Labs/Pathology. Mr. Ahmad also provides leadership and direction over medical technology and clinical engineering. Additionally, Mr. Ahmad is responsible for overseeing the Health Information Management group for the health system. In his role as VP and CIO, Mr. Ahmad is part of the Chancellor's core executive team.

 

In November 2004, Asif joined the Duke University faculty. He is an Associate Professor of the Practice of Clinical Informatics in the Department of Community and Family Medicine.

 

Before joining Duke University, Asif was the CIO at The Ohio State University Health System. Some of his key accomplishments at Ohio State include: deployed physician order entry across the enterprise; deployed totally film-less PACS environment; balanced scorecard automation for fiscal and quality of care tracking; developed medical error reduction and reporting tools.

 

Asif received the highest national award for excellence in computerization of patient record in 2001 - The Nicholas E. Davies Award. He and DUHS were profiled by InformationWeek magazine in their September 2005 issue as 500 top innovators in the IT Industry (1 of 42 in Healthcare). He also received the 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2006 Most Wired Health System Award, which awards the top 100 hospitals nationally, and the 2002 Innovator Award, American Hospitals Association for excellence in wireless and online patient care workflow. Under Asif's leadership, DUHS received i nternational awards from the Computerworld 2006 Honors program for its innovative advancement with Computerized Physician Order Entry and won the 21 st Century Achievement Award for ORView in the category of Medicine.

 

Asif is a board member of the National Alliance for Health Information Technology.
