With
more than 26 years of journalism experience to draw from, Renay San Miguel
is a weekend anchor for Headline News based in CNN's headquarters in Atlanta.
During the war in Iraq, San Miguel helped staff the CNN/U.S. military desk.
In that role, he interviewed CNN military analysts and outlined military
operations using maps and satellite imagery. Additionally, San Miguel participated
in Headline News' coverage of the war in Afghanistan in 2002.
Before he was a Headline News anchor, San Miguel provided technology updates
for Headline News and CNN/U.S. He was also the original anchor for the live
science and technology series Next@CNN. In 2002, San Miguel covered the
2002 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where he filed reports for
CNN, Headline News, CNNfn and CNN International. His reporting has included
several interviews with Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and Apple CEO Steve
Jobs. In September 2002, he hosted the Texas Press Club Katie Awards, which
included an on-stage interview with special honoree Walter Cronkite.
San Miguel co-anchored CNNRadio coverage of Election Night 2004, as well
as the State of the Union address in 2005. San Miguel has also hosted several
long-form CNN Radio specials on topics including identity theft; illegal
file-sharing and the U.S. Supreme Court's MGM vs. Grokster case; immigration
reform; Hollywood's fascination with science-fiction; and the future of
the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. In April 2005, he hosted a one-hour
CNN Radio special, "A Closer Look at Data Insecurity," focusing
on the rapidly growing problem of identity theft. San Miguel also provides
podcast interviews for CNN.com.
San Miguel joined Headline News in September 2001 from CBS News and CBS
Marketwatch, where he served as a reporter covering technology and the high
tech business industry. From 1997-2000 he was with CNBC, where he served
as a correspondent specializing in technology and the Internet. San Miguel
also covered NASDAQ and financial segments for CNBC. Before his work at
CNBC, he was with ABC affiliate WFAA-TV in Dallas, Texas. During his tenure
with WFAA-TV, San Miguel co-anchored the morning and noon weekday newscasts
and also reported on politics and education. In addition, he helped to create
La Vida, a half-hour Sunday Hispanic newsmagazine show for the affiliate,
for which he hosted and served as managing editor and reporter.
San Miguel has received several awards including a Heartland Emmy Award
and a University of Maryland Casey Award for his work on documentaries involving
television violence and welfare reform. In October 2003, San Miguel won
a Cybersecurity Journalism Award of Merit from Carnegie Mellon University
and the Newseum for columns and stories that appeared on the Headline News
Web site and CNN.com. In April 2005, San Miguel was presented an "Impacting
Our World" Award, part of the annual Dalton Pen Communications Awards
presented by Warwick Publishing.
San Miguel also has served as an anchor and reporter for stations in San
Francisco; Austin, Texas; and San Angelo, Texas. Before beginning his broadcast
journalism career, San Miguel was a reporter and columnist for the San Angelo
Standard-Time for six years.
San Miguel attended Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, which
in 2000 named him a distinguished alumnus. He is also a member of the National
Association of Hispanic Journalists.
