Dr. M. Lewis Temares

Dr. M. Lewis Temares is CIO, Vice President for Information Technology, and Dean Emeritus of the College of Engineering at the University of Miami . He joined the University in 1980 and became vice president for Information Technology in 1991. He served as Dean of Engineering from 1994-2007. Dr. Temares earned his undergraduate degree from City College in New York, an M.B.A. from Baruch College, his Masters of Science degree from Columbia University of New York, and his Ph.D. in statistics and marketing from the City University of New York.

As the first officially designated Chief Information Officer in any of the nation's 4,000 colleges and universities, he is responsible for the University of Miami 's computing and telecommunications applications and infrastructure. Under Lew's guidance, UM was an early adopter of quality practices such as Six Sigma and IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL). To help infuse these and other developing practices into his organization and make them available to the South Florida IT Market, Dr. Temares introduced a "quality" curriculum in his brainchild The NGJ Information Systems Institute which provides technical training courses such as Project Management, Ethical Hacking, ITIL and Six Sigma programs for his staff as well as for external businesses and organizations.

As a result of Lew's leadership and his human capital management, the University of Miami's Department of Information Technology was selected as number two in Computerworld's Best Places to Work in IT 2007; UM was number one in 2002. This is the sixth year that UM has placed in the top 5 of Computerworld's Top 100. Dr. Temares has written many articles and is often asked to speak at national and international conferences about the implementation and management of technology as well as how to build an award winning IT staff.
